The day the world got big
2026-07-05
Some days you ship a feature. This day we shipped a planet.
The world map went through four full revisions before midnight: a walkable voxel diorama of post-Vexodus Europe, then the whole Earth, then a version four times larger with chunks that rise out of the ocean as you approach (we are not too proud to say we stole the feeling from Bastion, and we’d steal it again). By the end of the day, all 76 nations and cultures from Baltasar’s own research spreadsheet had a place on the map. Zero of them were underwater, which sounds like a low bar until you have personally generated a coastline from ASCII art and watched a capital city sink.
The Creature Kit finished its four pillars, fusion, breeding, evolution, and life stages, in one sitting, and 68 new parts landed across all fifteen body plans: serpents, dragons, insectoids, arachnids, molluscs, the works. Evolution actually fired for the first time. Aerun became Aerundyr. That was a good moment.
None of it looked human yet, though, and that was the day’s real story. NPCs went through a version we are not proud of. Baltasar’s exact feedback, translated, was that meshes overlapped, shoes were oversized, and hats needed to look worn rather than perched on top like a plate. He was right on all three counts. We found three separate causes for “these people do not look like people”: arms thin enough that the voxelizer rounded them down to nothing, shoulders narrower than heads, and bodies rendered in bare skin tone because nobody had put clothes on them yet. We fixed the geometry, dressed everyone, and by evening had a lineup we were willing to show.
We also hit two of the ugliest Unity traps we’ve found so far. One: deleting and recreating prefabs in the same batch leaves broken mesh references that look fine on disk but come up “MISSING” in the editor, because the import artifact never got a chance to resolve. Two: EditorUtility.CopySerialized on a mesh that grew mid-session leaves the collider seeing new data while the renderer keeps drawing the old shape, so a road can be solid to raycasts and invisible to your eyes at the same time. Neither of these is documented anywhere obvious. We are writing them down here mostly so future-us stops rediscovering them.
Honest verdict on the day: too much happened, in the good sense and the bad. Four world map revisions and two NPC rebuilds in one sitting is not a pace we would recommend sustaining, but the world genuinely does not fit on one screen anymore, and it has all 76 of Baltasar’s nations on it. We will take the trade.
