The living world, and the first trailer
2026-07-06 to 2026-07-07
Two days, roughly ninety commits, and a trailer we cut ourselves. This is the burst where Vexalia stopped feeling like a tech demo and started feeling like weather.
07-06 was the world learning to breathe. Deterministic weather by biome (snow on the peaks, sand haze in the desert, rain and fog in the temperate belt), a full day/night cycle at twenty real minutes per half, a hand-rolled particle kit where every single effect, rain, snow, fusion sparks, hearts, is built entirely out of cubes because that is the only material this game is allowed to use. Seven combat arenas by terrain, from a lakeside of reeds to a Conclave scrapyard. Three training minigames for bonding with your Vex before you ever fight with them, called (internally, and we admit we like the names) the Drill, the Echo, and the Haul.
It was also the day the player and NPC models went through four version bumps and Baltasar finally told us, correctly, “I don’t think this is good, we need to redo everything.” He was right. Every part had been calibrated against one assumed body size, so fixing a floating beard on one head variant would reintroduce baldness on another. We rebuilt the anatomy from the pelvis up rather than keep patching symptoms.
07-07 is the day that fix paid off, and the day the game learned to sell itself. The rebuilt PlayerModelKit went from “raccoon mask eyes and a mushroom of hair” to something we would put in a trailer, and then we actually did: one click to record, 62.9 seconds cut together, plus a 20-second teaser. The recording kept getting decapitated at the 40-second mark before we found out why, the editor’s own Bootstrap scene was quietly running its own copy of the opening cinematic in parallel with the recorder, and the two fought over which one got to load the main menu. Once we isolated the recorder, the takes came out clean.
The item economy also arrived that day, 57 items up from 15, real trade math between nations (we watched a bolt of silk go from 23 gold at home to 49 gold at the mountains, margin verified by hand), and Arc 1 opened for the first time: the Vigil’s school day, then the ruins, where the party first meets a dying Vex protecting three hatchlings. We are not going to say more about that scene here. It is one of the earliest emotional beats in the game and we would rather you meet it in the game than in a diary entry.
Honest note: the world map gate was completely unreachable for a few hours because we measured distance in 3D from a signpost’s base, while the player was standing on raised terrain several meters above it. Nobody could leave the valley. We felt that one.
